Do you speak English?
Yes. Van Dijk is an English-speaking plumber in the Netherlands: you can call, book and talk to the plumber on site in English. Many of our customers are expats, so you never have to explain a clogged drain in Dutch.
How fast can a plumber come to my address?
In an emergency we give you priority and are often on site within 30 minutes, and in most cases on the same day anywhere in the Netherlands. Call us and we will tell you straight away when the plumber can be there.
How much does a plumber cost in the Netherlands?
Plumber cost in the Netherlands varies a lot: many companies charge a plumber rate per hour plus a call-out fee. We work differently: you get one fixed total price upfront, based on your situation. The price we agree is the price you pay, with no hidden costs.
How much does it cost to unblock a drain or toilet?
That depends on where the blockage is and what caused it. Before we start, you hear a fixed price for unblocking your toilet, sink or drain. Extra work only happens after your approval.
Do you charge extra at night or at weekends?
We are a 24/7 plumber, also in the evening, at weekends and on public holidays. You always hear the total price upfront, including the time we come out, so there are no unexpected surcharges on the invoice.
Who pays for a blocked drain, landlord or tenant?
In the Netherlands, unblocking drains up to the main sewer is usually the tenant's job, while broken or subsided pipes are the landlord's responsibility. Check your rental contract. If the cause is a defect in the pipe, our sewer camera inspection shows it on video, which helps you settle it with your landlord.
Is a blocked sewer covered by home insurance?
Water damage caused by a blockage is often covered by your home insurance (opstalverzekering) or contents insurance (inboedelverzekering), depending on your policy. On request we provide photos, a report and an itemised invoice so your insurer can assess the claim.
Do you work across the whole Netherlands?
Yes. We are a plumber for the whole of the Netherlands: our plumbers work in all twelve provinces, from Amsterdam and Den Haag to Groningen and Maastricht, so there is always a plumber near you.
What should I do while I wait for the plumber?
If possible, close the stopcock (water main), do not flush the toilet again and keep children and pets away from dirty water. On the phone we give you tips to limit the damage until we arrive.
Should I try baking soda on a clogged drain first?
The classic baking soda clogged drain trick (baking soda, then vinegar and hot water) can help with a slow draining sink caused by a little grease or soap. If water won't drain at all, or several drains are slow at once, the blockage is deeper and DIY will not reach it. Avoid chemical drain cleaners: they can damage your pipes.
